Resources and Information
Antigua Guatemala: La Antigua was formed in 1543, making it more than 4.5 centuries old. There are colonial cathedrals, monasteries, one of which is converted into a beautiful hotel, cobblestone streets, bakeries, open-air markets, bars, clubs, restaurants, a local taxi system (called tuktuks), horses and carriages, drug stores, etc. English-speakers are as common as Spanish-speakers and there is an expat community consisting of many young people as well as retirees. It truly looks like a movie set for a film taking place in old Spain.
Guatemala Entertainment: Only China exports more jade than Guatemala. There are a lot of jade stores and jade museums to check out, as well as the 12 malls and dozens of other shopping areas.
Outside of the city, there are resorts on the beach and water sports are very popular, including deep-sea fishing, diving, surfing, sailing, and more. You can hike up a volcano or see the Mayan ruins. There are helicopter tours which provide great views of the city, mountains and volcanoes. There are theaters, opera, art exhibits, and truly a large amount of things to do if you look for it. A great place to look for information is the local magazine Que Pasa? which is printed monthly.
Guatemala Medicine: Pharmacies are ubiquitous and most medicines are available without a prescription. They run about 30-40$ of the U.S. price. The doctors are world-class and a majority of them speak English, especially in the private hospitals. They also make house calls for around 200 Quetzales, around $25.
